  Description: Trees, to 27 m high, bark surface dark-brown, smooth; branchlets terete. Leaves simple, opposite, 5.5-17.5 x 2-5 cm, elliptic, elliptic-lanceolate, elliptic-oblanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, base cuneate or acute, apex acute, acuminate or caudate-acuminate, margin entire, coriaceous, glabrous, pellucid-dotted; petiole 10-20 mm, stout, grooved above, glabrous; lateral nerves 8-16 pairs, pinnate, slender, obscure, looped near the margin forming intramarginal nerve, intercostae reticulate, obscure. Flowers bisexual, 3-4 cm across, white or rose, densely packed; pedicel 5 mm long. Calyx tube 6 mm long, shortly and stoutly obconic, lobes 4, 3 x 6 mm, obtuse; disc thick. Petals 4, 7 mm across, free; stamens many, bent inwards in middle regularly when in bud; filaments 15 mm long. Ovary inferior, 2-celled, ovules many; style slender; stigma slightly acute. Fruit a berry, 23-25 mm across, globose, purple, crowned by calyx lobes.
