Description:
Evergreen trees, to 30 m high, bark 8-10 mm thick, surface yellowish-white, granulated, peeling off in small flakes; outer part of the inner bark fibrous, pale pink; branches slender, terete. Leaves simple, opposite, 5-10 x 2.5-5 cm, elliptic, elliptic-ovate or ovate-lanceolate, apex caudate-acuminate, base acute, margin entire, glabrous and glossy, membranous; petiole 10-15 mm long, slender, grooved above, glabrous, pellucid-dotted; lateral nerves many, slender, parallel, very close, prominent, looped near the margin forming distinct intramarginal nerve, intercostae reticulate, prominent. Flowers bisexual, 4-5 mm across, white, in axillary and terminal trichotomous cymes, branches slender, divaricate nearly at right angles; pedicels 2-5 mm long. Calyx tube 2 x 3 mm, turbinate, lobes 4, obtuse, obscure; disc obscure. Petals calyptrate. Stamens many, free, bent inwards at the middle when in bud; filaments 4 mm long. Ovary inferior, 2-celled, ovules many; style 1; stigma simple. Fruit a berry 5-8 mm across, ovoid, rarely globose, purple.
