  Description: Large woody climbers; stem and leaves very scabrid. Leaves 8-12 x 3-5 cm, elliptic-oblong, base attenuate, margins entire to serrate, apex acuminate, coriaceous; lateral nerves 7-9 pairs; petiole 4-8 mm long. Flowers white in terminal and lateral panicles, 2-2.5 cm across; pedicels 1-1.5 cm long. Sepals 4, 6-8 x 5-7 mm, orbicular, reddish, often reflexed in fruit. Petals 4, 0.8-1.1 x 0.7-0.9 cm, orbicular, pinkish-white. Stamens many, 7-8 mm long; filaments yellowish white. Carpels 3-5, c. 1.5 x 1 mm; ovules many; style c. 5 mm long. Follicles 2-3 or more, 6-8 mm long, globose, with 1-3 mm long beak, scabrid; calyx lobes accrescent on follicles. Seeds 1-2, c. 2 x 3 mm, ovoid, black; aril c. 6 mm long, red, fimbriate.
