Description:
Lofty trees, to 15 m high, bark greyish-brown; branchlets tetragonus. Leaves simple, opposite, estipulate; petiole 10-20 mm long, stout, grooved above, glabrous; lamina 8.5-17 x 4-7.5 cm, elliptic, elliptic-oblong or elliptic-obovate, base narrowed and decurrent on petiole, apex rounded or obtusely acuminate, margin entire, chartaceous, glabrous; lateral nerves 9-12 pairs, parallel but very irregular, distant, prominent, curving upwards and becoming faint towards the margin forming indistinct intramarginal nerve, intercostae reticulate, obscure. Flowers bisexual, small, cymes axillary and from the leafless axils half the length of or equaling the leaves; peduncle 2.5-5 cm, branches slender angled; calyx lobes 4, rounded or subacute; no thick staminal disc; petals calyptrate; stamens many, bent inwards at the middle when in bud; ovary inferior, 2-celled, ovules many; style 1; stigma simple. Fruit a berry, pink-purple, 0.8 x 6 cm.
