Description:
Shrubs, to 2 m high; stems terete or weakly angular, glabrescent below, hairy above, faintly swollen above the nodes, purple. Leaves opposite, unequal in pairs, ca 9 x 3.5 cm, membranous, narrowly elliptic, faintly decurrent and cuneate or acute at base, entire, faintly serrulate or crenulate at margin, acuminate at apex, lineolate; hairy on mid and secondary veins softly pilose at margin, dark green above, red-punctate and pale green beneath; lateral nerves 8-10 pairs; petioles ca 4 cm long. Flowers in small heads on 3-forked peduncles, usually enclosed in 2 unequal involucral bracts; peduncles double-edged, slender, 2-7 cm long, pubescent; bracts in 4 rows, ovate, obtuse-acute, variable in size, ca 6 x 4 mm, pale green below, dark green above, ciliate at margin, nearly glabrous, sparsely white-punctate outside; bracteoles slightly larger than calyx, elliptic-lanceolate, ca 4 mm long, ciliate at margin, hairy, not accrescent. Calyx ΒΌ united, lobed above; tube ca 1 mm long; lobes 5, lanceolate, 3 mm long, sparsely gland-dotted outside, ciliate at margin, white-hairy at apex, not accrescent. Corolla campanulate; tube insignificant; ventricose portion gradual, ca 1 cm long, 5-lobed; lobed ovate, acute ca 2 x 2 mm. Stamens 4, didynamous, prominently hairy only in middle, sparsely hairy below, included; longer filaments ca 3 mm long; shorter ones ca 1 mm; anthers lobes of smaller filaments unequal, or one suppressed. Disc stalk-like, ca 0.5 mm long; ovary ca 1.5 mm long, minutely glandular-hairy at apex, glabrous below; style ca 1 cm long; one lobe suppressed. Capsules few in each spike, very minutely stalked, ovoid-elliptic, ca 1.3 x 0.3 cm, glandular-hairy, thin-walled, excluded from calyx; seeds 4, orbicular, ca 4 x 3.5 mm, smooth, depressed on one side, not areolate, with a fine membrane encircling, sometimes reduced to a line.
