Description:
Shrub, ca 3 m high; stems more or less quandrangular, much scabrous, acutely so and very rough with short harsh hairs when young. Leaves opposite, ca 6 x 4 cm,ovate, cuneate or acute at base, serrate at margin, acute at apex, hispid with bulbous- based hairs on both surfaces; petioles 3-5 cm long, sulcate above. Inflorescence spikes, terminal and axillary, capitate, leafy, ca 5 cm long; peduncles ca 4 cm long, thickened above, acutely quandrangular, very scabrous; floral bracts ca 5 cm long, overlapping head; bracts leafy, lanceolate, very rigid, scabrous, papillose; bracteoles narrowly lanceolate, ca 2 cm long, membranous, ciliate. Calyx divided nearly to base; lobes linear-lanceolate, very acute, ca 2.5 cm, membranous, ciliate. Corolla tubular-ventricose, subsymmetric, glabrescent, blue; tube ca 2 mm long; ventricose portion ca 2.3 cm long; lobes obovate-orbicular or rounded, veined. Stamens 4; staminal sheath hairy at margin; filaments glabrous; two central ones shorter, included. Ovary thinly hairy at tip; style ca 2 cm long, hairy. Capsules ca 2.5 cm long, glabrous, minutely stalked; seeds 2, ovoid, ca 1.2 cm across, glabrous, exareolate.
