  Description: Erect, tufted, non-rhizomatous annuals, 15-50 cm tall; culms terete, smooth, glabrus. Leaves reduced to 2-3 membranous sheaths; sheaths 2-10 cm, brown, mouth mucronate. Inflorescence pseudolateral, head with 2-7 spikelets. Bract 1, erect, look like the continuation of the stem. Spikelets sessile, 0.5-1 x 0.3-0.4 cm, ovate, subobtuse, stramineous; rachilla wingless, persistent. Glumes spiral, 3-4 x 2-2.5 mm, ovate, obtuse, mucronate, slightly keeled, midrib prominent. Hypogynous bristles 5-6, unequal, longer ones exceeding the nut, retrorsely scabrous. Stamens 3; anthers c. 1 mm long, linear. Style c. 2 mm long; stigmas 2. Nuts 1.5-2 x 1.5 mm, obovate, biconvex, apiculate, shining black, transversely wrinkled.
