Description:
Shrubs, 1-1.5 m tall. Leaves opposite, 12-16 x 4-7 cm, elliptic-oblong or lanceolate, membranous, glabrous, pale green, base acute, margins entire, apex acuminate; lateral nerves 5-7 pairs, distinct below; petioles 4-6 cm long. Spikes axillary, erect, subsessliie, usually one per axil, sometimes 2 together, 5-7 cm long; bracts linear-lanceolate, margins glandular hairy, apex spiny, persistent, ca. 10 x 1.5 cm; bracteoles narrowly lanceolate, margins hairy, apex spiny, persistent, ca. 6 x 1 mm. Flowers sessile, irregular, mouth ventricose. Sepals 5, linear-lanceolate, membranous, margins hairy, persistent, green, ca. 5 x 1 mm. Corolla tubular, base cylindric, bluish-purple, mouth 2-lipped, ca. 7 x 4 mm; upper erect, 2-fid; lower 3-lobed, spreading, pitted. Stamens 4, didynamous; filaments 3-4 mm long, glandular pit. Anthers dithecous, oblong, versatile, ca. 1 mm across. Disc annular.
