Description: Suffruticose herbs or low shrubs, with long shoots sometimes to 4 m long, very variable, mostly a much-branched scrambler or climber, growing from an underground xylopodium, sometimes to 1 m tall, often prostrate or creeping, rooting at the nodes, more or less strigose- or hirtous-pubescent. Leaves decussate-opposite or ternate, very variable in size and shape, mostly 1.2-3.5 cm x 8-16 mm, ovate or subovate (the larger ones) or subrhomboid-oblong or lanceolate, coarsely toothed, narrowed to the acute base or cuneate-attenuate into the petiole, resinous-punctate on both surfaces; petiole short, usually about 4 mm long. Inflorescence at first capitate and hemispheric, 2.5 or more cm wide, later elongating and finally oblong in fruit; peduncles long, filiform, surpassing the subtending leaves; bractlets thin-herbaceous, concave, ciliate, with deflexed margins apically, resinous-punctate, the outer ones broadly ovate or ovate-oblong, acuminate; flowers sessile in the head, about 1.25 cm long. Calyx about 2 mm long, minutely 4-or 5-dentate, subvillous-pubescent. Corolla infundibular, slightly irregular, varying from pink, lilac, or lavender to violet, white, rose, purple, or magenta, paler on the outside, the tube slender, about twice as long as the subtending bractlets, 8-10 mm long, whitish below, the inner ones (younger ones) often with a white-edged yellow "eye", the throat yellow, the limb spreading, about 6 mm wide, 4 or 5-lobed. Drupes dark-violet, globose, about 4 mm long and wide, fleshy, half enclosed by the hyaline fruiting-calyx; endocarp woody, 2-locular, splitting into 2 halves septicidally, the septum-walls thin; seeds incrassate dorsally.
