  Description: Stout perennial subshrubs; stem covered with annular leaf scars. Leaves spiral, closely packed, to 24 x 5.5 cm, elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate; petiole 5 cm long, canaliculate, base expanded. Racemes terminal, 15-25 cm long, erect. Flowers many, closely packed; perianth lobes 6, biseriate, similar, united into a tube below, 2 cm long; stamens 6, free, epitepalous; anthers oblong; ovary 3-celled; ovules solitary in each cell; style 1, slender, stigma terminal. Fruit a berry. 1.5 cm across, 3-lobed.
