  Description: Aquatic herbs. Leaves elongate, 10-16 x 0.5-1 cm, 7-9-nerved, glabrous, narrow at base, apex attenuate. Flowers dioecious. Male spathes 7-8 x 0.2-0.3 cm. Flowers to 1 x 0.3 cm, 6-9 per spathe; peduncle equal or exceeding leaves; pedicel 1.5-3 cm. Sepals 3, oblong, 9 x 1.5 mm, obtuse. Petals to 3.5 x 0.1 mm. Stamens 9(10-12); filaments unequal, 0.5-1.5mm; anthers subequal, to 3 mm; pistillodes 3, somewhat connate at base, to 2 mm. Female plants often dwarfed, to 10 cm: flower solitary; peduncle slightly overtopping leaves, to 12 cm; pedicel 0. Ovary 2 x 0.1 cm, equal to spathe, rostrum 3-7 cm, filiform. Fruit to 4 cm, torulose, finely ribbed, glabrescent; seeds ovoid-oblong, not tailed, 1.5 x 0.8 mm, subacute-obtuse at the ends, alternately long-/short-tubercled in 7 or 8 rows.
